She is in the grip of a profound, isolating grief, which Strout, in the sort of crisp and emotionally penetrating prose that won her a Pulitzer, describes as “like sliding down the outside of a really long glass building while nobody sees you”. This time, we find her in the aftermath of the death of her beloved second husband, David. ![]() Crucially, however, it was narrated from the vantage point of the future, at a reasonably secure point in Lucy’s life. My Name is Lucy Barton was searingly affecting as Lucy told of the abuse and impoverishment of her upbringing. ![]()
